Ex Nihilo

Ex Nihilo is the Latin phrase for "Out of Nothing"
After the War many people came from nothing to somthing, once rationing and the depression of the war was over.

There are so many examples of coming Ex Nihilo that happen every day. Winning the lottery, getting a job, winning a competition. It can also been seen in a less materialistic way, somthing that brings your life joy having a child, getting married.

Looking at the illistrations of the 1950s a theme has emerged throughout many of the illistrtors styles.
The use of colour on colour or just two block colours.
Its like the woman is hidden, or wanted to stand out.

This illistration by Andy Warhol  clearly shows hot the woman in the illistration is hidden in colour with no facial featutres.

Women in the 1950's

Married at 21, Mothers at 22. As soon as the war was over, women were sent back to the kitchen after their participation in the war. In the 1950's Marriage was more popular than ever!
In a popular book from 1953 for advice for women it states.
"A happy marriage may be soon, not as a holy state or as somthing to which a few may luckily attain, but rather as the best course, the simpliest, the easiest  way of life for us all."
